First Time at Sushi Hiro? A Beginner’s Guide to Kaiten Sushi
Walking into Sushi Hiro for the first time? Grab a seat, watch the belt glide past and get ready for some fun. Kaiten sushi — Japanese for “rotating sushi” — is one of the easiest, most relaxed ways to enjoy a meal together, whether it’s your first plate or your five-hundredth.
How the belt works
Our chefs keep the kaiten belt topped up with freshly made sushi, gunkan, inari and little bites. When something you like passes by, simply lift the plate off the belt and tuck in. No waiting and no menus needed — just pick whatever looks good.
What the plate colours mean
Every plate on the belt is colour-coded, so you always know what you’re picking:
- Pink Plate — RM2.20: everyday favourites like tamago (sweet omelette) sushi, corn mayo gunkan, inari and edamame.
- Blue Plate — RM3.30: signature varieties such as salmon sushi, torched salmon mentai, unagi and smoked duck.
- Black Plate — RM5.50: premium picks like tiger prawn (ebi king) sushi, torched Aussie beef and salmon roe gunkan.
Stack your empty plates at your table as you go — it’s the easiest way to keep track of everything you’ve enjoyed.
Craving something that isn’t on the belt?
The belt is only half the story. Our full menu has hand rolls, crunchy taco temaki, ramen, rice bowls, grilled dishes, Japanese-style pasta and desserts, all made to order. Every dish has a short code — like M4 for our Hiro Aburi Shiok Maki — which makes ordering quick and easy. Browse the full menu before you visit so you know what to look out for.
A little sushi etiquette (don’t worry, it’s easy!)
- Take the whole plate, and never put a plate back once it has left the belt.
- Dip the fish side of nigiri lightly into soy sauce, not the rice, so it doesn’t fall apart.
- A little wasabi goes a long way — mix it in or dab it on, however you like.
- Nibble a slice of pickled ginger between different sushi to refresh your palate.
- Eating sushi with your fingers is perfectly fine!
Tips for your first visit

- Visiting with kids? Let them spot their favourite colours on the belt — it’s half the fun. Our Hiro Kids Menu has sets made just for little ones aged 12 and below.
